Film Review: “I Am Still Here” and Its Historical Context

“I Am Still Here” is a powerful Brazilian drama directed by Walter Salles, featuring Fernanda Torres in a stunning performance as Eunice Paiva. The film is set during the 1970s Brazilian military dictatorship and follows Eunice’s struggle after her congressman husband, Rubens, is taken away by the regime A B. The film’s portrayal of political persecution and the resilience of the human spirit is both poignant and thought-provoking C.

Comparing “I Am Still Here” to films about the Stasi, such as “The Lives of Others”, reveals striking similarities and differences. “The Lives of Others” is a German drama directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, set in East Berlin during the 1980s. It follows Stasi Captain Gerd Wiesler as he spies on playwright Georg Dreyman D. Both films explore themes of surveillance, oppression, and the impact of authoritarian regimes on individuals and families. However, while “The Lives of Others” focuses on the internal conflict of a Stasi officer, “I Am Still Here” centers on the emotional journey of a woman fighting to keep her family together in the face of immense hardship D.

When examining the role of Hitler and security in media, film, and literature, it’s essential to consider the manipulation of media during the Nazi era. The Nazi regime, under the leadership of Joseph Goebbels, systematically controlled the German media and culture industry to spread propaganda and suppress dissent E. Films like “Triumph of the Will” and “The Eternal Jew” were used to promote Nazi ideology and dehumanize perceived enemies F. The regime’s control extended to radio, newspapers, and even children’s literature, ensuring that every aspect of life was influenced by their propaganda G.

In contrast, films like “I Am Still Here” and “The Lives of Others” serve as reminders of the importance of freedom and the dangers of authoritarianism. They highlight the resilience of individuals who stand up against oppressive regimes and the enduring human spirit that seeks justice and truth.

These films, along with historical accounts of the Stasi and Nazi propaganda, underscore the critical role of media in shaping public perception and the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression in any society.

The Violence and Torture plus Death is depicted about 5 per cent only: Sounds and Military Troops on Lorries and more like sounds of tortured victims, finally beaten to death next door.

Helicopters are shown plus the sounds: Implications are subtle, as the dead victims are thrown into the deep sea. Or half dead corpses as well – who knows?

Mass graves are not shown, no bones or human remains.

But numbers like 20 000 people male and female tortured and killed.

Like in Chile – Allende.

Role of the CIA and USA not even included.

What struck me most: The most friendly and smiling Labour Hero is arrested, knows exactly what will happen by dressing up in his Congressman Tie and jacket.

I knew this might come, I am mentally prepared, I will hug my children and kiss my wife and pretend, I will come back soon.

Chance of coming back? This is the question of the Audience.

Reception depends on background and culture and age.

Will he be back alive one day?

Hope dies last.

This film is about freedom of thought and dignity and disgrace.

And mostly about Family and Love and Care.

My thoughts will always be free, jails have no walls for thoughts.

Die Gedanken sind frei.

The Wall.
